A discussion forum is also known as a discussion board, bulletin board, discussion group, message board, newsgroup or online forum.
Purpose of the Forum
The SADTC Discussion Forum offers a platform whereby members may - in the form of posted messages - share and discuss information and opinions on matters related to dental technology.
The Forum is based on a directory structure. The top-end of the forum is divided into categories.A category is just a special type of forum. Under categories are sub-forums and these sub-forums can have more sub-forums. The topics (also called 'threads) come under the lowest level (sub-forums) and this is where users may start their discussions by means of posted messages.
Users who wish to post messages must first register with the SADTC Forum and subsequently log in.
Users do not have to log in to read existing messages.
An unregistered user, a guest or visitor, may view the contents of the forum but will not be able to post messages.
Click on the 'Register' link at the top right of a forum page. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Once your registration has been completed, you may set your preferences on the 'User Control Panel' (UCP). The link is at the top left of a forum page.
Posts are enclosed in a block containing the user's details and the date and time it was submitted. Members are allowed to edit or delete their own messages. Posts are contained in topics, where they appear as blocks one after another. The first message starts the topic ('thread') and is referred to as the 'original post'. Messages that follow in the topic are meant to continue discussion about that post, or respond to other replies.
The maximum length of a message is set at 60,000 characters (this may be adjusted by the administrator.
A topic is a collection of messages (posts) contained in a forum, displayed from oldest to latest. A topic is defined by a title, an additional description that may summarize the intended discussion, and an opening or original message, which opens whatever dialogue or makes whatever announcement the poster wished. A topic can contain any number of messages, including multiple messages from the same member, even if posted one after the other.
When a member posts a topic, it will jump to the top since it is the latest updated message in a topic. Similarly, other topics will jump in front of it when they receive posts. When a member posts a topic for no reason other than having it go to the top, it is referred to as 'bumping'. Bumping has been disabled in the SADTC Forum.
A topic's popularity on the forum is measured in reply counts. Once a forum's users have lost interest in a particular topic, it becomes a dead topic.
The forum is governed by a moderator who is an employee of SADTC. The moderator has access to the posts of all members for purposes of moderating discussions and also keeping the forum clean. The moderator will answer users' concerns about the forum in general, and will also respond to specific complaints.
The privileges of the moderator include: deleting, merging, moving and splitting of posts; locking and renaming of titles; banning, suspending, unsuspending, unbanning and warning the members; adding, editing, removing the polls of threads.
Effective user management improves the quality of a forum, its appeal, and its usefulness for a community of users.
The administrator manages the technical details required for running the forum.
- manages the forum rules
- creates forums and sub-forums
